DNA TEST FOR HAIR LOSS DEVELOPED

15.09.2009 - 19361824

People who spend all their time worrying about hair loss might soon be able to take a DNA test.

Researchers are now able to take a saliva swab and look for a genetic variation on the X chromosome which has been linked with baldness, KABC reported.

Equipped with this information, a doctor is then able to tell someone how likely they are to lose their hair at any point in the future.

People who are assessed at low risk have an 80 per cent chance of keeping their hair until 60, while anyone in the high risk group has a 60 per cent chance of severe baldness by the age of 40.

Speaking to the news provider, hair restoration physician Alan Bauman explained that people should not be unduly worried about their results.

He said: "This just gives another piece of information and then you decide with your doctor what you want to do."

Recently, Dr Bessam Farjo, a Manchester-based hair loss specialist, told the Financial Times that people a full head of hair can make a man look younger, something that might interest people thinking about using Regaine.
